Some Are Still Recovering From Hurricane Ike
in 2011.
Hurricane Ike hit the gulf coast of Texas
on Sept. 13, 2008 and as of the date this
was written, thousands of homeowners are
still struggling to recover.
The
city of Houston received more than 2,300
applications for housing assistance due
to the destructive storm, and they only
have the funds to help 242 of those families.
Vertie
Fobbs, age 81 and a resident of Sunnyside,
is left with a battered home from the hurricane
that struck three years ago. "When
it rains, that water comes from here and
runs down that bathroom wall,” Vertie
Fobbs said. She
says she has lived in her home for 46 years
and does not want to move. She hired a contractor
who took her money and left a mess. So,
as a last resort she turned to the city
of Houston for help.
The
problem is that she’s not alone. One
of her friends is in the same situation,
with walls caked with mold from Hurricane
Ike 's water damage.
“We
are working as fast as we can,” said
Marc Eichenbaum with the city’s Housing
and Community Development office.
“We’re
waiting for that money to come in to Houston,
but, to date, we haven’t received
it and we don’t know when we’ll
ever receive it,” Eichenbaum said.
There
are over 2,300 stories like this one just
in Houston. There must be tens of thousands
of similar stories from cities that were
touched by Ike, but it appears that there’s
not enough money to go around.
